What Does This Mean to You?

I think there are tons of of ways to read this. Some are the way that Augustine intended it, some through the eyes of what we now know.

When I read it, I agreed with Augustine's comment on its face. Miracles are what we label things whose nature or they way they interact with nature we do not understand. Why one person spontaneously (as it seems to us) goes into remission from cancer and another dies may seem like a miracle for the first, because we don't understand why it happened.

Just because we are ignorant to the ways of cancer, people's recovery, etc, does not make it a miracle in the supernatural sense that the first person lived. It was only incomprehensible to us now.

Just like there was a time it seemed like magic determined who got sick because we could not see the germs.

So yes, I think Augustine. Miracles, in the supernatural sense, only exist when we are ignorant to nature.
