Micro and Macro Evolution: Same Thing

Creationists: Micro-evolution and macro-evolution are not actual scientific terms. All evolution is done on a small scale over a long period of time which produces large changes. Not only is it terribly misinformed to say micro-evolution and macro-evolution, it is a distinction without a meaning because they are the same thing viewed in a different scale of time.

  1. I have heard some people say they believe in microevolution but not macroevolution, and as soon as I hear them say that, I don't bother arguing with them. I used to bother arguing with those people, but they just seem hopeless anymore.

  2. Sorry, but you're just plaing wrong on this point. There is a distinction between micro and macro evolution, and you can find this term used in several scientific papers, on universities and so on.

The problem with the creationist use of it though, is that they don't use clear definition of the word, they keep it undefined so they can change goalpost whenever they want to, while scientists and lecturers uses a much less ambigous definition. Anything within a specie is micro evolution, anything above species level is macro evolution.

And according to this definition, both micro and macro evolution has been observed and are thus facts.

  4. Two decent links: One on Macro http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macroevolution#Misuse and the second on Micro http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microevolution#Misuse, and how they have both been misused. Rather interesting.
