What Do You Want Out of an Atheist Community
Almost
every Sunday I get together with a bunch of atheists and we have
brunch. This week we talked about community and what we can do to
create it.
We realized that we first need to decide why
people would come. Even though people who go to church may not actually
go there to hear the word of god, that is why the building is there and
it is the purpose of the meeting. We were not successful in creating a simple purpose but we thought we could start with what we were hoping to get out of a community of atheists.
Some of the things people wanted out of an atheist community event were
intellectual stimulation, belonging, networking, being important to
someone who is not obligated to you, support, resource sharing, fun,
putting a good face on atheism, and a vehicle for doing good.
We talked about if we should embrace rituals, if it is good or not to
re-purpose religious rituals, and what rituals should be like. We also
deliberated the effectiveness of a monthly vs weekly set up. There was
some discussion about the size, and how it could be most effective.
We also discussed the potential downfalls of a secular/atheist dogma or
set of rules and having a leader who has authority over those rules for
the group.
So, what do you think the simple purpose should
be? What simple purpose would appeal to you? What would you want out
of an atheist community? What would you be willing to give in order to
have an atheist community? Chime in.

Michigan Says Religious Bullying A-Okay!
Wow. The language of the anti-bullying bill reads:
"This section does not prohibit a statement of a sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction of a school employee, school volunteer, pupil, or a pupil and parent or guardian.”
Constitutional Literalists and the Post Office
I
think it is funny how people who believe in the purity of the
constitution are the ones who want to get rid of the post office because
it does not turn a profit (has taken no money from the federal
government in 31 years except for a small amount for disabled folks and
other very tiny programs).
Wait a darned tootin' second. Pick a belief, fundamental constitutional adherence, or getting rid of the post office.
To everyone who thinks that we should get rid of the post office, take a
moment to consider Section 1 Article 8 of the Constitution which in
part reads: "To establish Post Offices and Post Roads;"
But hey, don't let the facts get in your way -- it isn't like you ever did before.

Feelings and Speaking
When should we stop caring about a person's or people's feelings and speak even if what we say will certainly offend someone?

Marine Takes On 30 Cops In Wallstreet Faceoff
Damned right. Soldiers take an oath to protect and I wish they all took it this seriously.

Incentives and Cultural Biases and the Foster Children Who Pay
No child should ever be placed in foster care if there are loved ones to care for them, no matter the native status. PERIOD. Foster care should always be the last resort because it is a truly awful thing to do to a child. It lives with them for the rest of their lives, like a ghost howling in their ear.
